Meet our next Artistic Director and Principal Conductor:

Gary Matthewman

We are delighted to announce Gary's appointment as our next Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, succeeding our founder and present Artistic Director Toby Purser for the 2019-20 season and beyond.

Gary is well-known to British audiences as a song pianist, having performed worldwide with many leading names in the world of classical singing. Now gaining a reputation as an emerging conducting talent, notable early engagements as conductor include Britten’s War Requiem (Chamber Orchestra) with soloists Mark Padmore and Roderick Williams at the Sage Gateshead, working as Assistant Conductor on Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk for Graham Vick’s Birmingham Opera Company (Conductor, Alpesh Chauhan) and performances of Strauss and Beethoven with the Vacation Chamber Youth Orchestra in Yorkshire.

Gary is Professor of Vocal Repertoire at the Royal College of Music and song coach for the Jette Parker Young Artists at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He is currently enrolled on the prestigious conducting programme at the Royal Academy of Music, mentored by Sian Edwards.

Toby Purser, who will become Principal Guest Conductor, says “Orion has been my proudest achievement, and I am absolutely thrilled that Gary has accepted the role of Artistic Director. I am really excited for the new ideas he will bring, and the opportunity for the orchestra’s members to develop a relationship with one of the UK’s most talented musicians. Orion has a bright and inspiring future ahead.”

Gary’s debut with Orion is planned for October 1st at St James’s Piccadilly.

Meanwhile, at Cadogan Hall on April 30th, we will celebrate our 14 years under Toby Purser’s direction with a performance of Beethoven Symphony No.9, conducted by Toby, and joined by the London Philharmonic Choir.
